How to negotiate your salary in an interview.

If had been an idealist, then thinking of a perfect world would be like we’ d all be working at jobs we love, making piles of money and nobody would ever have to worry about negotiating salary. Unfortunately, the reality is something different and we end up getting jobs the pay package in which is a major cause of dissatisfaction which can further lead to resentment, anger and in some cases poor performance which can ultimately lead to a situation when you are left with no job!

Interviews these days are usually multi-step processes, starting with a phone interview, moving to a video interview, and often finishing up with multiple individuals interviews. It is always better that the hiring team brings up the salary issue at first and if you are lucky enough, it may suit your expectations, however sometimes salary is not a topic of discussion even after the third round. In such cases, the candidate has to take the initiative in order to avoid lending himself with a meager salary below the expectation level.

Never feel shy to negotiate the salary: Though you badly need a job at a point of time, but it’s a mutual cooperation. Not like that you only need the job, it is the employer also who needs good employees. If you are confidante enough of your skills and performance, you must negotiate salary at your own terms.

Money is a never ending requirement. So always negotiate based on your value/worth to the organization instead of negotiating based on your own money requirement. The employer will never pay more than what you owe to them.

You need to be clear and pointed in what you will accept and below which you will not be ready to work for since it is not wise to drag the negotiation too long.

Wait for the right time to negotiate: At first, let them make it clear that you are among the final deserving candidates, only after that you should think of negotiating salaries. Starting to negotiate too early can be dangerous.

Always ask the final offer in writing:  When you are committed a salary, before joining always take the agreement in writing. By following these points, you can bring up the salaries at job interviews. Must give them a try. All the best!!
